He is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest fighters of all time. Ali started his professional career in 1960 after winning a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Career

Amateur Career

  • Ali began boxing at the age of 12 and by the age of 18, he had won two national Golden Gloves titles and an Olympic gold medal.

Professional Career

  • Ali turned professional in 1960 and quickly made a name for himself with his speed, agility, and charisma. He won his first world heavyweight title in 1964 against Sonny Liston.
  • In 1967, Ali was stripped of his title and banned from boxing for three years due to his refusal to be drafted for military service in Vietnam. He returned to the ring in 1970 and in 1971, he fought Joe Frazier in what was billed as the 'Fight of the Century'. Ali lost that fight, but it was the beginning of a series of legendary bouts.
  • Ali regained his title in 1974 in a bout known as the 'Rumble in the Jungle' against George Foreman. He went on to defend his title several times before retiring in 1981.
