Wilhelm Steinitz was an Austrian and later American chess player, born on May 17, 1836, in Prague. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of all time. Steinitz began his professional career in Vienna before moving to London in 1862, where he dominated the chess scene for years. He was officially crowned the first World Chess Champion in 1886.
