Capt. Kennedy added, “After speaking with the family, and in an attempt to quell media inquiries, they have given permission to confirm the death of Kierston Russell.”

Family and Community Grieve Together

Kierston and Keelon Russell, both recent graduates of Duncanville High School in Texas, were poised to embark on their new journeys at the University of Alabama this summer. Kierston had been an athlete on the school’s girls’ basketball team, while Keelon, a highly-rated quarterback, had been named the No. 2 recruit for the 2025 class.

In response to the overwhelming outpouring of support from friends, family, the University of Alabama, and the wider community, Kierston’s mother, April Moore, shared a heartfelt message on social media. She expressed gratitude for the condolences and support that have flooded in since her daughter’s passing.

“As a family, we are absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude at the outpouring of thoughts, prayers and messages we have received from family, friends, the University of Alabama, Duncanville High School, and people all across the country this week,” Moore stated. “There is no way we can respond to them all, but please know we see and feel all of your love and support. These are words a mother never imagines having to write about their child in a lifetime. I know I will never truly be whole again.”

A Legacy of Resilience

Both siblings were known for their strength, not only in athletics but also in their close bond. Kierston’s tragic passing has left a deep impact on her family, friends, and the communities of Duncanville and Tuscaloosa. Her brother, Keelon, has yet to comment publicly on the loss, but the Russell family’s resilience has been a testament to their character.

The entire University of Alabama community, along with Duncanville High School, is grieving the loss of a young life full of promise. As the Russell family navigates this heartbreaking time, they have expressed their deepest gratitude for the support from all who have reached out.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit continues to serve as a liaison between the family and the Alabama Department of Forensic Services as they complete their investigation.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire sports community remain with the Russell family during this unimaginable time of sorrow.
