As they get ready to replace starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, who was essential to the Ole Miss Rebels' offensive performance, they face a significant obstacle. Here comes Austin Simmons, a previous recruit who placed in the top 300 and has been patiently waiting for his chance to assume leadership. All eyes are on Simmons to see how he will assume the leadership role and what he can do as the club enters a new era.
Simmons, a highly rated four-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, was ranked No. 266 in the USA. His hiring caused a stir, and now that Dart has left, Simmons is prepared to live up to the anticipation. Although the 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback has displayed promise, it remains to be seen if he can duplicate Dart's achievements with the Rebels.
Simmons has had a gradual transition into the starting position. He got little play behind Dart after being redshirted in his first season, but that hasn't stopped him. He’s been given the opportunity to develop and perfect his game, especially when Ole Miss coaches identified his abilities and potential. Although Simmons has undoubtedly made an impression, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin believes that Simmons and Dart vary significantly in one crucial area: running the ball.
Kiffin has been explicit about Simmons' running contributions, even though Jaxson Dart was well-known for his dual-threat skills, which includes 495 rushing yards and three touchdowns the previous season. "I wouldn’t picture him being really involved in a lot of quarterback runs," Kiffin said recently. Defences now have to respect the quarterback's threat in the ground game, which is a big change for an Ole Miss offence that had become used to Dart's ability to make plays with his legs.
Simmons has the means to make an impression even if he may not be as dynamic a runner as Dart. Simmons has shown signs of promise despite having no substantial SEC experience. For instance, Simmons led the Rebels down the field right away after replacing an injured Dart in a game against No. 3 Georgia. He then threw for a touchdown and helped the club secure a vital victory. Simmons' ability to remain composed under pressure and step up when necessary was evident in his performance.
There is more to Simmons' tale than just his football prowess. Famous ESPN insider Pete Thamel recently talked about how Simmons' history is different and far more fascinating than that of many of his peers. Simmons' path to Ole Miss is all the more impressive given that he graduated from high school two years ahead of schedule, Thamel said. He had already obtained his associate degree from Miami Dade undergraduate and finished part of his undergraduate studies before he even made it to his third season with the Rebels. "His path is completely unique to anyone that we’ve seen," Thamel said, emphasising Simmons’ exceptional journey to this point.
That quick rise in both academics and athletics is indicative of a motivated young guy who takes on problems head-on. Simmons expressed confidence in his ability to manage the demands presently put on him by saying, "There's a lot more coming" in reference to his future. Simmons' "composure" and "really interesting makeup" are other qualities Thamel said set him apart. When Kiffin first witnessed Simmons tossing a football, he was impressed by the way the ball left his hand and compared it to the former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
A major factor in Simmons' development has been his calm confidence and attention to detail. He exhibits maturity well above his years with his composed demeanour in public and in interviews. The young quarterback has received accolades from Lane Kiffin for his excellent leadership and innate capacity to perform well under duress. Simmons undoubtedly feels he is prepared to lead the Rebels offence, despite the enormous responsibility of carrying on Jaxson Dart's heritage.
Simmons is currently in charge of Ole Miss football's future, and the stakes are quite high. Even while he might not be as good at running as Dart, he has the opportunity to succeed in the SEC thanks to his powerful arm, football acumen, and ability to step up when needed. Simmons has only just started his adventure, but he is already demonstrating that he is prepared for the difficulties that lie ahead.
Austin Simmons will continue to grow and, ideally, establish himself as Ole Miss's next great quarterback as the 2024 campaign goes on. Although his story is still developing, it is certain that Simmons is a gifted and motivated leader for the Rebels, and this is his moment to shine.
