Summary

Nissan, officially named Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, is a multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Yokohama, Japan. It produces a wide variety of vehicles, ranging from small hatchbacks to high-performance sports cars and rugged SUVs.

Established on 26 December 1933, the company has its origins in the Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works, which produced the first DAT car in 1914. Nissan has grown to become one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. The company has a vast network of production facilities spread across 20 countries and regions, including Japan, the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Spain, China, India, and Thailand.

Nissan is known for its advanced technology, particularly in the field of electric vehicles. The Nissan Leaf, launched in 2010, is currently the world's best-selling highway-capable electric car. The company is also a pioneer in the development of autonomous driving technology, with its ProPILOT Assist system available on select models.

In addition to its core automobile business, Nissan is involved in a variety of other ventures. The company has a significant presence in motorsport, with achievements in various racing series including the FIA World Endurance Championship and the Japanese Super GT Championship. Nissan also operates a financial services division, which provides financing and leasing options for customers and dealerships.

As of 2020, Nissan's global workforce comprises over 130,000 employees. The company is part of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the world's largest automotive partnership. Despite facing numerous challenges in recent years, Nissan remains committed to its vision of enriching people's lives through technology and innovation.

History

While the previous Nissan headquarters was also officially named 'Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.', both the old and the new headquarters are invariably referred to by their unofficial name, Nissan. Nissan is the name of the company that was established in 1933 on the border between Yokohama and Tokyo, which itself derives its name from the nearby Nihon Sangyo (Japan Industries). This unofficial name caught on soon after the original company's establishment; the people of Japan used to simply call it Nissan ('Nissan'). Therefore, the company's common name became 'Nissan', which is usually anglicized to 'Nissan'. This translation, however, could be argued to be inaccurate, since Nissan refers not to 'Nissan' but to the original address of the company: Yokohama, Japan.

Nissan's history is deeply rooted in the Japanese culture and industry. The company started as a small car manufacturing unit and gradually expanded its operations worldwide. During its journey, Nissan faced several challenges and made significant achievements. The company has been instrumental in bringing some of the most innovative and technologically advanced vehicles to the market. Nissan's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has been the driving force behind its success.

Nissan's journey started with a small team of dedicated engineers and workers who were determined to build a car that would serve the needs of the people. They worked tirelessly to develop a car that was reliable, efficient and affordable. The result of their efforts was the Nissan Model 70, which was launched in 1937. This was the first car produced by Nissan and it marked the beginning of a new era in the Japanese automobile industry.

Over the years, Nissan has introduced several innovative features in its vehicles. The company was the first to introduce a fully electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, in 2010. The Leaf was a revolutionary product that changed the perception of electric vehicles. It was the first mass-produced electric vehicle and it set a new standard in the automobile industry. Nissan's commitment to innovation and technology is also evident in its other products. The company has introduced several advanced safety features in its vehicles such as the Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind spot warning.

Nissan's journey has been a testament to its commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. The company has faced several challenges along the way, but it has always emerged stronger. Nissan's story is a source of inspiration for other companies and it serves as a reminder of the power of determination, hard work, and innovation.

Structure and facilities

An appropriate location, featuring good connectivity and ample space for future expansion, was pinpointed in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan. Being situated on the border between Yokohama and Tokyo, the new headquarters was initially known as 'Nissan de Yokohama'.

The company's aim was to possess both the headquarters and the surrounding lands, though initially a lease was made on the municipal terrains, with a final purchase only occurring in 1968. The plans for the industrial complex had been drafted as early as the late 1940s by Takashi Ishihara, a former employee for the company.

Driven by the company's president, Katsuji Kawamata, the associates dealt with an increased fee for supporting the construction costs for the new headquarters, offered substantial donations, and some even volunteered to work on the construction site on holidays or weekends. There was even a 'steel campaign', which involved large quantities of steel bars being donated to the company.

The construction officially commenced on 14 June 1953. Less than two years later, and at a cost of 12,037,683 yen, on 1 December 1954 (a national holiday), a crowd filled the headquarters for the inaugural event against rivals Toyota.
