Summary

FC Bayern Munich, commonly referred to as Bayern Munich or simply Bayern, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1900, the club is based in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and plays its home matches at the famous Allianz Arena, which has a seating capacity of over 75,000.

Bayern Munich has a rich history, boasting 30 Bundesliga titles, 20 DFB-Pokal cups, 2 UEFA Champions League titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era under legendary manager Udo Lattek, who led Bayern to numerous Bundesliga titles and a Champions League victory during his tenure from 1970 to 1975 and again from 1983 to 1987.

Known for its attacking style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, and Thomas Müller. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances, Bayern Munich remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence German and world football.

History

FC Bayern Munich is one of the most popular football clubs in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in Europe. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 4,000 officially recognised branches of the FC Bayern Munich Fan Club (FCBFC), in at least 100 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that FC Bayern Munich has 75 million fans worldwide. The club has one of the highest social media following in the world among sports teams, with over 50 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Bayern Munich had the loudest fans in the Bundesliga.

Early years (1900–1963)

FC Bayern Munich was formed in 1900 by 11 football players, led by Franz John. Although Bayern won its first national championship in 1932, the club was not selected for the Bundesliga at its inception in 1963. The club had its period of greatest success in the middle of the 1970s when, under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer, it won the European Cup three times in a row (1974–76). Overall, Bayern has reached ten UEFA Champions League finals, most recently winning their fifth title in 2020.

Beckenbauer years (1965–1977)

In 1965, Bayern was promoted to the Bundesliga where they won the league title in their first season. The team, with players like Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, and Sepp Maier, won the European Cup three times in a row from 1974 to 1976, and also won the Intercontinental Cup twice.

Post-Beckenbauer years and success (1977–present)

After Beckenbauer's departure, the club had a number of successful managers. Udo Lattek won numerous titles between 1977 and 1983. Ottmar Hitzfeld led the team to Champions League victory in 2001. In recent years, the club has enjoyed success under managers like Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola. Guardiola left the club for Manchester City at the end of the 2015–16 season and was replaced by Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti was sacked by Bayern on 28 September 2017 following a 3–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League, and replaced by interim manager Willy Sagnol.

Ownership

FC Bayern was originally funded by members of a Munich gymnastics club (MTV 1879). In 1900, eleven members of the football division left the congregation to form FC Bayern München. The club's first major period of success came under the leadership of president Kurt Landauer who, with the help of coach Richard Dombi, built a squad which won four national championships in the 1930s. In the aftermath of World War II, Bayern was regulated into the then regional league, Oberliga Süd, and continued to achieve mediocre results despite having one of the largest supporter bases in Germany.

In 1977, construction tycoon Fritz Scherer became president. His reign came to an end when Uli Hoeneß, who had played for the club from 1970 to 1979, was appointed general manager. Bayern Munich is today majority owned by its club members, but Adidas, Audi, and Allianz have minority stakes, having invested in the club as a means of strengthening its financial structures.

In 1994, Bayern Munich was the first Bundesliga club to be quoted on the stock exchange. In 2001, Bayern Munich bought 50% of the shares of the Allianz Arena for approximately €346 million, with Allianz SE obtaining the naming rights to the stadium for 30 years. In 2014, Bayern Munich increased their stake in the Allianz Arena to 75% at a cost of €110 million. Since 2017, Uli Hoeneß is the president and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is the CEO of the club.

The club's financial health continues to be strong, with consistently high revenues and profits. The club's strong financial position has allowed it to invest heavily in its squad and infrastructure, ensuring its standing as one of the most successful and best-known football clubs in the world.

Award

FC Bayern Munich is one of the most accomplished clubs in Europe in terms of trophies won. The club's first significant trophy was the South German Championship, won in 1900. In 1932, the club won their first national championship, and followed this with their first DFB-Pokal win in 1957. Since then, they have amassed a record 31 Bundesliga titles and 20 DFB-Pokal victories. The club has also frequently appeared in the DFL-Supercup, lifting the trophy 8 times.
