As football enthusiasts converge in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the eagerly anticipated FC Bayern Munich versus SL Benfica match at Bank of America Stadium, the city's summer heat has presented a unique challenge for both fans and players alike. The intense heat adds a unique twist to this thrilling encounter, making it an unforgettable experience. Despite the overwhelming excitement of the game, the soaring temperatures have been a defining aspect of the event, creating an atmosphere unlike any other.
Fans Adapt to Unusual Heat
The unexpected heatwave in Charlotte has caught many international fans off guard, particularly those from cooler climates like Germany, who are more accustomed to milder conditions. In fact, many have shared that the temperatures in Charlotte surpass those they've experienced during games in Florida.
As temperatures soared, fans adopted creative methods to stay cool. Many took to waving fans to create a breeze, wearing hats to protect themselves from the sun, and opting for sandals over closed shoes to maximise airflow and comfort. For some, water was the drink of choice, a necessity given the extreme heat.
Celia Cabral, a devoted Benfica supporter, remarked on her preference for water over the more commonly consumed beer, especially in such conditions. “For us, we’re more water drinkers. We’re not big, heavy beer drinkers, but I know it’s funny Charlotte is known for their beers, but year, for us, it’s definitely water,” said Cabral. “Usually, I would say Miami is hotter, but Charlotte is bringing the heat for sure.”
For Bayern supporters like Friedrich Bohmeyer and Julian Weber, the experience has been nothing short of a challenge, especially with their traditional attire. “It’s incredibly hot. It’s even hotter than Miami, so I can’t believe that especially with my lederhosen so it’s going to be even hotter,” Weber stated. “Drink a lot of water, drink a lot of beer as well. Use some sunblock or maybe a hat.”
Ryan Gibson, a local Bayern fan from Charlotte, shared a creative solution to beat the heat, which he learned from his grandfather. “Honestly, it’s something my grandpa taught me a long time ago to take, like, a washcloth or a, I guess, this is a bar towel,” Gibson said. “But soak it in cold water and then freeze it in the freezer overnight, and then just kind of like mold it around your neck and then eventually the water just turns into ice water then you’ve got it around your neck the whole time.”
However, even this clever method proved less effective in the intense heat on match day, with the towel not lasting more than two hours.
Keeping Players Cool
With the extreme heat, player welfare has been a primary concern. A FIFA spokesperson explained the measures in place to keep the athletes cool and well-prepared for the physically demanding conditions. Players are provided with cooling breaks at the 30th and 75th minutes of each match to ensure they can recover and maintain their performance.
In addition to cooling breaks, FIFA's regulations allow for a maximum of five substitutions during regular play, with the option for an additional substitution should the match go into extra time. Teams are also permitted a concussion substitution, ensuring player safety throughout the game. Moreover, all teams are required to have at least three rest days between matches to facilitate proper recovery.
Fan Guidelines for the Upcoming Matches
For those attending the other two matches scheduled for Saturday and Monday, the Bank of America Stadium has provided some helpful guidelines to ensure fan safety and comfort. Fans are allowed to bring two sealed water bottles, along with an empty reusable water bottle, to help them stay hydrated throughout the event.
The teams playing this saturday for the round of 16 in Charlotte are Benfica and English side, Chelsea, while the winner of group E and runners up of Group F, expected to be either River Plate or Inter and Borussia Dortmund or Fluminense are going to face each other in the north carolinian capital on monday.
As the heat continues to test both players and spectators, this match will surely be remembered not just for the football but for the incredible endurance shown by everyone involved.
