Summary

Chelsea Football Club, commonly referred to as Chelsea or simply The Blues, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1905, the club is based in Fulham, London, England, and plays its home matches at the famous Stamford Bridge Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 40,000.

Chelsea has a rich history, boasting 6 English league titles, 8 FA Cups, 2 UEFA Champions League titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed a particularly successful era under manager Jose Mourinho, who led Chelsea to 3 Premier League titles in two stints with the club.

Known for its defensive solidity and counter-attacking style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Frank Lampard, John Terry, Didier Drogba, and Eden Hazard. Despite recent managerial changes and inconsistent performances, Chelsea remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence English and world football.

History

Chelsea FC is one of the most successful football clubs in the world, boasting a high average home attendance in Europe. The club reports that its global fan base encompasses over 200 officially recognised branches of the Chelsea FC Supporters Club (CFSC), spread across at least 24 countries. The club leverages this support during its international summer tours. Accounting firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Chelsea FC has 75 million fans worldwide. The club has one of the highest social media followings in the world among sports teams, with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Chelsea FC had some of the most passionate fans in the Premier League.

Early years (1905–1955)

Chelsea FC was formed in 1905 at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher's Hook) by businessman Gus Mears and his brother Joseph Mears. From the beginning, they played their home games at Stamford Bridge, a stadium Gus Mears had previously built for athletics. They first competed in the Football League in 1905, and their initial colours were Eton Blue and white, the racing colours of Lord Chelsea.

Years of Progress (1955–1970)

In 1955, under the management of Ted Drake, Chelsea FC won their first league championship. Drake modernised the club and removed the club's Chelsea pensioner crest, changing the kit colours to royal blue with white shorts and adopting the lion rampant reguardant crest. In 1965, the club won its first League Cup under the management of Tommy Docherty.

Modern Success and Dominance (2003–present)

In July 2003, Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea FC and invested heavily in new players, leading to the club's first Premier League title in 50 years in 2005 under manager Jose Mourinho. Mourinho, in his two spells at the club, along with interim and full-time managers like Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti, and Antonio Conte, led the club to multiple domestic and international titles, including the UEFA Champions League in 2012 under Roberto Di Matteo, and again in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel.

Ownership

Originally funded by Gus Mears and his brother Joseph, Chelsea FC was established as a club in 1905. The ownership of the club remained in the Mears family until 1982, when the club was sold to Ken Bates for a nominal sum of £1, taking on significant debts. Bates was a controversial figure during his tenure as Chelsea chairman, but he also presided over the modernisation of the club's Stamford Bridge home and a significant upturn in the team's fortunes on the pitch.

In 2003, the club was bought by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in a deal worth £140 million. Abramovich's arrival marked a new era for Chelsea, with significant investment in the playing squad leading to a period of unprecedented success, including the club's first Premier League titles and their first ever Champions League triumph. Under Abramovich's ownership, Chelsea has also continued to develop Stamford Bridge and has explored options for a new stadium in West London.

Today, Chelsea FC is owned by the Roman Abramovich through his investment company Millhouse LLC, with Bruce Buck serving as the club's chairman. The club's finances have been transformed under Abramovich's stewardship, with Chelsea regularly posting profits and having one of the highest revenues in football. However, Abramovich's ownership has not been without controversy, with allegations of financial fair play breaches and criticism of the club's high turnover of managers. Despite these challenges, Chelsea remains one of the most successful and wealthiest clubs in world football under Abramovich's ownership.

Award

Chelsea FC is one of the most successful clubs in Europe in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Second Division title, which they won in 1955. In 1955, the club won their first top-tier title and won the FA Cup for the first time in 1970. Since then, they have gone on to win a total of 6 top-division titles—including 5 Premier League titles—and their total of 8 FA Cups. Those titles have meant the club has appeared 15 times in the FA Community Shield; of those 15 appearances, Chelsea FC have won 4 times.
