Summary

Hockey is a widely played team sport that exists in various forms, primarily field hockey and ice hockey. In field hockey, two teams compete on a grass or artificial turf pitch, using curved sticks to control a small ball and attempt to score goals. Each team aims to outscore the other by hitting the ball into the opponent's goal. The game is played in two halves, and players are required to demonstrate teamwork, strategy, and skill.

Ice hockey, on the other hand, is played on an ice rink, where teams skate while controlling a puck. Players wear skates and protective gear, including helmets, to ensure safety. The objective is to score goals by shooting the puck into the opposing team's net. Ice hockey is known for its fast-paced nature and physical contact, which adds a unique element to the sport. Matches are divided into three periods, with teams switching ends after each period.

Both forms of hockey have a strong following and are governed by international and national federations. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) oversees field hockey, while the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) manages ice hockey. Major tournaments, including the Olympic Games, World Cups, and continental championships, highlight the sport's competitive nature.

Hockey has a rich history, with origins tracing back centuries. Field hockey evolved in the 19th century in England, while ice hockey developed in Canada in the 19th century as well. Today, hockey is played at various levels, from grassroots to professional leagues, attracting participants and fans worldwide. Its appeal lies in the excitement of competition, the camaraderie among players, and the skill required to excel in this dynamic sport.

Key Types of Hockey
  • Ice Hockey
Indoor Team Sport: Played on an ice rink, players use their sticks to shoot a vulcanised rubber puck into the opponent's net to score goals. It is recognised for its speed and physicality.

  • Field Hockey
Outdoor Team Sport: Played on grass, artificial turf, or synthetic fields, players use their sticks to hit a round, hard, rubber-like ball into the opponent's goal. It is known for its quick passing and strategic play.

  • Inline Hockey
Team Sport: Similar to ice hockey but played on a dry surface using inline skates. The game is played with a puck on a non-ice surface, and the rules differ slightly from traditional ice hockey.

  • Sledge Hockey
Paralympic Sport: Designed for players with physical disabilities, it follows most of the ice hockey rules, with players sitting on sleds that have two hockey blades on the bottom.

  • Street Hockey
Informal Game: Also known as road hockey, it is a non-standard version of the sport, usually played on a dry surface like asphalt or concrete, often in a driveway or parking lot.
Competitions
  • Hockey is part of the Olympic Games, with both ice hockey and field hockey included. Ice hockey also features in the Winter Paralympics in the form of sledge hockey.
  • The highest level of professional ice hockey is the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America. Major field hockey tournaments include the Hockey World Cup and the Hockey Champions Trophy, as well as the FIH Pro League and the Commonwealth Games.
