Summary

The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) is the global governing body for sport climbing, responsible for overseeing the organisation and promotion of climbing competitions worldwide. Established in 2007 and headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, the IFSC works to enhance the profile of climbing as a competitive sport, ensuring the development and regulation of the discipline across various formats.

The federation manages a range of competitions, including World Championships, World Cups, and continental championships. These events provide a platform for climbers to compete at elite levels and showcase their skills in different climbing disciplines, such as lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. The IFSC has also introduced a unified competition format, which combines these disciplines into a single event, aiming to increase the appeal of climbing to broader audiences.

In addition to organising competitions, the IFSC is dedicated to promoting the growth of climbing at grassroots levels. The federation collaborates with national federations to develop training programmes for athletes, coaches, and officials, ensuring that the sport adheres to international standards. The IFSC also places significant emphasis on safety and fair play in all its events.

One of the notable achievements of the IFSC is its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which led to sport climbing's inclusion in the Olympic Games starting in 2020. This milestone has further elevated the sport's visibility and has encouraged more participants to take up climbing as both a recreational activity and a competitive pursuit.
