The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) is the global governing body responsible for overseeing the sport of modern pentathlon. Established in 1948, the organisation was founded to manage and promote modern pentathlon, a sport created by Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. Modern pentathlon is an Olympic event that combines five disciplines: fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, shooting, and running. The UIPM's primary mission is to promote these events, ensure their smooth organisation at international competitions, and foster the development of athletes worldwide.
Headquartered in Monaco, the UIPM operates under the jurisdiction of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It manages a range of international competitions, including the Modern Pentathlon World Championships, the Modern Pentathlon World Cup, and the Olympic Games, where the sport has been included since 1912. The UIPM also introduced variations of the sport, such as the biathle and triathle, to increase accessibility and participation globally.
The organisation’s structure consists of the UIPM Congress, which serves as the main decision-making body, and the UIPM Executive Board, which implements strategic plans and policies. The UIPM is affiliated with various continental organisations to help manage and coordinate events across different regions, supporting the development of modern pentathlon at a grassroots level.
Through its work, the UIPM aims to enhance global awareness of the sport, promote fair play, and ensure that modern pentathlon remains relevant in the contemporary sporting world. It also encourages participation from a wide range of athletes and countries, reflecting the sport's combination of physical endurance, precision, and versatility. The UIPM continues to adapt its events to keep pace with the changing landscape of international sports.
There are five continental associations affiliated with the UIPM. These associations are responsible for organising continental championships, providing support for their member federations, and communicating their interests at UIPM Board meetings:
