The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), established in 1900, is the international governing body for cycling. It is responsible for overseeing competitive cycling events, ensuring rules are maintained across various disciplines, and promoting cycling globally. Headquartered in Aigle, Switzerland, the UCI serves a worldwide membership and works closely with continental confederations and national federations to develop cycling infrastructure, promote safety, and encourage participation at all levels.
The UCI regulates several cycling disciplines, including road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking, BMX racing, BMX freestyle, cyclo-cross, and para-cycling. The organisation also promotes lesser-known disciplines such as indoor cycling and gravel racing. It organises numerous prestigious competitions, including the UCI World Championships, UCI World Cups, and UCI WorldTour events. These competitions play a significant role in fostering elite cycling talent and encouraging global participation.
The UCI is also deeply involved in the fight against doping in cycling and collaborates with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to ensure a fair and clean sport. Through its Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF), the UCI implements comprehensive anti-doping measures to protect the integrity of cycling competitions.
Another key focus of the UCI is the development of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. It actively encourages cycling as a solution for urban mobility and environmental sustainability, partnering with cities and organisations to make cycling more accessible and safer.
The UCI maintains strong affiliations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and supports the inclusion of cycling disciplines in the Olympic Games. Through these efforts, the UCI plays a central role in both the professional sporting world and the wider promotion of cycling as a sustainable and healthy activity.
There are five continental associations affiliated with the UCI. These associations are responsible for organising continental championships, supporting their member federations, and communicating their interests at the UCI Board meetings:
