Summary

The World Archery Federation (WA), formerly known as the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc (FITA), is the international governing body for the sport of archery. Founded on 4 September 1931 in Lwow, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine), its main aim was to regulate archery and reintroduce it to the Olympic Games, which it successfully achieved in 1972. World Archery’s headquarters is located in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The federation currently has over 160 national member associations, which are responsible for promoting and organising archery activities in their respective countries. World Archery oversees various international competitions, including the World Archery Championships, which started in 1931, and the Archery World Cup, launched in 2006. Archery is also part of the Summer Olympics, Paralympics, and World Games, with events like recurve and compound archery being competed at the highest level.

The federation is governed by an executive board, with Prof. Dr. Uğur Erdener serving as president since 2005. It is also affiliated with global sports bodies such as the International Olympic Committee and the International World Games Association. World Archery follows anti-doping regulations and promotes clean sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) rules.

World Archery’s competitions are held in different formats, including outdoor, indoor, field, and para-archery events. It publishes world rankings based on the performance of athletes across these events. The rankings are updated regularly, and athletes accumulate points based on their results in international competitions.
