Summary

Basketball is a dynamic team sport played by two teams, each consisting of five players. The objective is to score points by shooting the ball into the opposing team’s basket, positioned at a height of 10 feet at either end of a rectangular court. The game is typically played on an indoor court, though it can also be played outdoors.

The game begins with a jump ball at centre court, after which teams compete to gain possession. Players can pass, dribble, or shoot the ball, working together to create scoring opportunities while adhering to a set of rules that govern play. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Basketball is played in four quarters of either 10 or 12 minutes, depending on the competition, with professional and international leagues adhering to slightly different timing rules. Teams score by making field goals, which are worth two points if taken inside the three-point line or three points if shot from beyond the arc. Free throws, awarded after certain fouls, are worth one point each.

Defensive play is crucial in basketball, with players aiming to block shots, steal the ball, or force the opposing team to take difficult shots. Physical contact is regulated, and fouls can lead to free throws or possession changes.

The sport enjoys global popularity, with professional leagues such as the NBA in the United States and major international competitions like the FIBA World Cup and the Olympic Games. Basketball's accessibility and minimal equipment requirements have contributed to its widespread appeal, with millions of people around the world playing and following the game at both amateur and professional levels.

Key Types of Basketball
