Colorado Avalanche was formed in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team initially played games against other WHA teams, but on 20 November 1972, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the team—blue and white—they achieved a notable victory against the Winnipeg Jets.
In the 1995-96 NHL season, the team, now known as the Colorado Avalanche, secured their first Stanley Cup under the leadership of head coach Marc Crawford. The Comsat Corporation, a telecommunication company, originally founded the team in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques before relocating and renaming it as the Colorado Avalanche in 1995. Post the relocation, the team quickly found success and won two Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001, under the leadership of key players like Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy.
With the passing of time, in July 2000, Stanley Kroenke, an American businessman and entrepreneur, bought the Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, and the Pepsi Center. Kroenke, who already owned the NFL's St. Louis Rams, purchased these Colorado-based sports franchises through his company, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. The company manages the day-to-day operations of the teams and the Pepsi Center. His wife, Ann Walton Kroenke, inherited her ownership stake in these teams following the NFL's cross-ownership rule that forced Stanley to transfer his ownership.
