Sydney Football Club, commonly referred to as Sydney FC or simply Sydney, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in Australia. Founded in 2004 as part of the inception of the new A-League, Sydney FC is based in Moore Park, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and plays its home matches at the famous Allianz Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 45,000.
Sydney FC has a rich history despite its relatively recent formation, boasting 5 A-League Championships, 3 Premierships, 1 FFA Cup, and has represented Australia in the AFC Champions League multiple times. The club enjoyed a particularly successful period under manager Graham Arnold, who led Sydney to two Championships and two Premierships between 2014 and 2018.
Known for its attacking style of play, the club has nurtured some of Australia’s greatest talents, including Alex Brosque, Steve Corica, Adam Le Fondre, and Bobô. Despite facing the inherent challenges of a still-growing football culture in Australia, Sydney FC remains one of the country’s most valuable football clubs, with a passionate local fan base and a tradition that continues to influence Australian and world football.
Sydney FC is one of the most recognised football clubs in Australia, boasting one of the highest average home attendances in the A-League. The club states that its nationwide fan base includes more than 50 officially recognised branches of the Sydney FC Supporters Club (SFSC), across many Australian states. The club takes advantage of this support through its nationwide tours during off-season. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Sydney FC has 5 million fans nationwide. The club has the highest social media following in Australia among sports teams, with over 1 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Sydney FC had the most passionate fans in the A-League.
Sydney FC was founded in 2004 as a part of the establishment of the A-League, Australia's premier football competition. The team's inaugural season was successful, with them being crowned the first A-League Champions. The team initially played friendlies against other newly formed A-League clubs, but on 28 August 2005, they competed in their first competitive match; wearing the club’s now iconic sky blue, they defeated Adelaide United 2–0.
In October 2009, the appointment of Vitezslav Lavicka as the team's manager marked a significant turning point for the club. Lavicka demanded an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions. Lavicka led the team to an A-League Championship in his first season, and followed up with a Premiership (regular season title) in his second season, marking one of the most successful periods in the club's history.
In May 2012, Lavicka announced that he was to step down as manager at the end of the football season, but would remain at the club as a director and club ambassador. He left behind a legacy as one of the most successful managers in A-League history. The club announced the next day that Central Coast Mariners manager Graham Arnold would replace him from 1 July, having signed a three-year contract. Steve Corica took over as manager in 2018, leading the team to further success, including back-to-back Championships in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
Originally funded by the New South Wales Football Association, the club became a limited company in 2004 and sold shares to local supporters for $1 via an application form. In 2005, majority ownership passed to businessman Frank Lowy who invested $1 million to shape the club into a top-tier competitor, including former chairman Scott Barlow. After Lowy stepped down in 2014, the club was financially backed by David Traktovenko, who assumed control of the club after an investment of $2 million. Traktovenko promoted his son-in-law, Scott Barlow, to the position of chairman in 2012.
In 2014, after the departure of Frank Lowy, David Traktovenko, a Russian businessman, began acquiring shares in the club; for an investment of approximately $2 million, he accumulated a majority shareholding and took control. When Lowy stepped down, his shares were bought out by Traktovenko, who then sold a percentage of his shares to his son-in-law, Scott Barlow, in 2015; Barlow went on to become chairman. Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch showed interest in buying the club in 2016, but did not meet Traktovenko's asking price. In 2018, chairman Scott Barlow attempted to sell the club to Tony Pignata for $20 million, but the sale fell through and Pignata joined the board of directors instead.
Sydney FC is one of the most successful clubs in Australia in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the A-League Championship, which they won in their inaugural season in 2005. In 2017, they also won their third premiership and their third championship to be the first A-League team to win three championships. Since then, they have gone on to win a record 5 A-League Championships and their total of 4 Premierships is the highest in the competition. Those titles have meant the club has appeared multiple times in the FFA Cup Final; of those appearances, Sydney FC have won the cup once in 2017.
