Liverpool Football Club, commonly referred to as Liverpool or simply The Reds, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1892, the club is based in Liverpool, England, and plays its home matches at the famous Anfield Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 53,000.
Liverpool FC has a rich history, boasting 19 English league titles, 7 FA Cups, 6 UEFA Champions League titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era in the 1970s and 1980s, with significant achievements also under the management of Jurgen Klopp, who led Liverpool to a Premier League title and a Champions League victory.
Known for its attacking style of play and the iconic 'You'll Never Walk Alone' anthem, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, and Mohamed Salah. Despite facing challenges, Liverpool FC remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence English and world football.
Liverpool FC is one of the most popular football clubs globally, boasting one of the highest average home attendances in Europe. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Liverpool FC Supporters Club (LFSC), in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Liverpool FC has 81 million fans worldwide. The club has the fifth highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Juventus), with over 76 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Liverpool FC had some of the most passionate fans in the Premier League.
Liverpool FC was formed in 1892 due to a dispute between the Everton committee and John Houlding, club president and owner of the land at Anfield. After eight years at the stadium, Everton relocated to Goodison Park in 1892 and Houlding founded Liverpool FC to play at Anfield. Originally named 'Everton F.C. and Athletic Grounds Ltd' (Everton Athletic for short), the club became Liverpool FC in March 1892 and gained official recognition three months later, after The Football Association refused to recognise the club as Everton.
In December 1959, the managerial appointment of Bill Shankly led to a successful period for the club. He revolutionised many aspects of the club, such as improving the training facilities and changing the kit. Shankly led the team to the Second Division title to gain promotion to the top-tier First Division in 1962, before going on to win three First Division titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup.
On 22 February 1991, Kenny Dalglish surprisingly resigned as manager citing personal reasons and was replaced by former player Graeme Souness. Under Souness, Liverpool had some disappointing seasons, although they won the 1992 FA Cup. After Souness's resignation in 1994, Roy Evans took over as manager, but despite his efforts, the club did not win the Premier League title. In recent years, under the management of Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool FC has experienced a revival, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.
Initially funded by John Houlding, the club's founding owner, Liverpool FC was incorporated as a limited company in 1892. In 1892, after a rent dispute, Houlding formed Liverpool F.C. to play in his Anfield ground. The club's ownership remained local with minor changes until 1915, when the tenure of then-chairman Thomas Crompton began—he would serve until 1947. Following Crompton, the club was helmed by a series of local businessmen including John Moores, who took over in 1963, and was key in the club's success in the 1960s and 1970s.
Upon Moores' retirement in 1973, the club was taken over by David Moores, his son, who invested significantly in the club. His tenure saw the club enjoy significant success, particularly under the managing of Kenny Dalglish. However, the club's finances suffered during the late 1990s and early 2000s, leading to David Moores selling the club to Tom Hicks and George Gillett, American businessmen, in 2007. This period was marked by financial turmoil, and the club was sold to its current owners, Fenway Sports Group, in 2010 after a protracted court battle. Fenway Sports Group, led by John W. Henry, has overseen a period of stability and success, including the winning of the Premier League in 2020.
Liverpool FC is one of the most successful clubs in Europe in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Lancashire League, which they won in their inaugural season in 1892. In 1901, the club won their first league title and won the FA Cup for the first time in 1965. Since then, they have gone on to win a total of 19 top-division titles—including a record 19 Premier League titles—and their total of 7 FA Cups. The club has appeared 22 times in the FA Community Shield; of those 22 appearances, Liverpool FC have won 15 times, including twice when the match was drawn and the trophy shared by the two clubs.
