Summary

Club Atlético Boca Juniors, commonly referred to as Boca Juniors or simply Boca, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1905 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Boca Juniors is based in the neighborhood of La Boca and plays its home matches at the famous La Bombonera Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 54,000.

Boca Juniors has a rich history, boasting 34 Argentine league titles, 13 Copa Argentina trophies, 6 Copa Libertadores titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era under legendary manager Carlos Bianchi, who led Boca to multiple league and Copa Libertadores victories between 1998 and 2004.

Known for its passionate and committed style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Juan Roman Riquelme, Martín Palermo, Diego Maradona, and Carlos Tevez. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances, Boca Juniors remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a passionate global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence Argentine and world football.

History

Boca Juniors is one of the most popular football clubs in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in South America. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Boca Juniors Supporters Club, in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Boca Juniors has 16 million fans worldwide. The club has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after Barcelona and Real Madrid), with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Boca Juniors had the loudest fans in the Argentine Primera División.

Early years (1905–1945)

Boca Juniors was formed in 1905 by five Italian immigrants. The team initially played games against local neighborhood teams, but on 21 April 1905, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the Swedish flag—blue and yellow—they were defeated 4–0 by Mar del Plata.

Golden Era (1945–1969)

In 1945, the appointment of Juan Carlos Lorenzo as manager sparked a golden era for the club. Lorenzo demanded an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions. Lorenzo led the team to numerous league titles and international cups, establishing Boca Juniors as a dominant force in Argentine football.

Post-Bianchi years and struggles (2004–present)

On 15 December 2004, Carlos Bianchi announced that he was to retire as manager at the end of the football season, but would remain at the club as a director and club ambassador. He retired as the most decorated manager in Boca Juniors history. The club announced the next day that Alfio Basile would replace him from 1 January, having signed a four-year contract. Martin Palermo took over as interim player-manager 10 months later, when Basile was sacked after a poor season in which the club failed to defend their Argentine Primera División title and failed to qualify for the Copa Libertadores for the first time since 1991.

Ownership

Originally funded by Boca Juniors General Assembly, the club became a civil association in 1905. In 1913, the club's first stadium, known as Estadio Ministro Brin y Senguel was established, which was largely funded by the members and players of the club. The club has always been a member-owned association, with the club president being elected by members in an election, which occurs every four years. Some of the most notable presidents of the club include Mauricio Macri, who went on to become the President of Argentina, and Jorge Amor Ameal, the current president of the club.

Throughout its history, Boca Juniors has remained financially stable, largely due to its membership system and its success on the field, which has resulted in significant revenue from tournament winnings and player transfers. The club has also been able to secure lucrative sponsorship deals, such as its current deal with Adidas.

The club has also invested significantly in its youth academy system, known as La Candela, which has produced many successful players who have gone on to have successful careers both at Boca Juniors and internationally. The sale of these players to clubs in Europe and elsewhere has also provided a significant source of income for the club.

In recent years, the club has also sought to diversify its income streams, through initiatives such as the Boca Juniors Theater, which hosts shows and concerts, and the Boca Juniors Museum, which is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Buenos Aires. The stadium, known as La Bombonera, is also used for concerts and other events, providing additional revenue for the club.

Award

Boca Juniors is one of the most successful clubs in South America in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Argentine Primera División, which they won in 1919. Since then, they have gone on to win a record 34 top-division titles, and their total of 13 Copa Argentina is second only to River Plate. Those titles have meant the club has appeared a record 27 times in the Supercopa Argentina; of those 27 appearances, Boca Juniors have won a record 13, including four times when the match was drawn and the trophy shared by the two clubs.
