Summary

Chicago Bears Football Club, commonly referred to as Chicago Bears or simply Bears, is one of the most iconic and successful football teams in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys, it changed its name to Chicago Bears in 1922. The team is based in Chicago, Illinois, USA, and plays its home matches at the famous Soldier Field Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 61,500.

The Chicago Bears have a rich history, boasting 9 NFL Championships, including one Super Bowl victory, 4 conference championships, and numerous division championships. The team enjoyed its most successful era under legendary coach Mike Ditka, who led the Bears to a Super Bowl victory in 1985.

Known for its defensive style of play, the team has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Walter Payton, Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, and Brian Urlacher. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances post-Ditka, the Chicago Bears remain one of the NFL’s most valuable football teams, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence American and world football.

History

Chicago Bears is one of the most popular football teams in the National Football League (NFL), with one of the highest average home attendances in the league. The team states that its fan base spans across the entire United States and includes numerous officially recognised branches of the Chicago Bears Fan Club, in at least 24 states. The team takes advantage of this support through its domestic summer tours. Sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Chicago Bears has millions of fans nationwide. The team ranks high in social media following in the NFL, with millions of Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Chicago Bears had some of the loudest fans in the NFL.

Early years (1920–1945)

Chicago Bears was formed in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys by A. E. Staley, a corn products company. The team initially played games against other local teams, but on 17 October 1920, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the company's colors—blue and orange—they won 7–0 against the Moline Universal Tractors.

Halas years (1945–1967)

In April 1945, the appointment of George Halas as head coach led to a new era for the team. Halas demanded an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions. Halas led the team to multiple league title victories, including the championship in 1946. In 1963, the club won the NFL Championship, marking a significant victory during the Halas era.

Recent years and struggles (2000–present)

On 3 January 2013, Lovie Smith was dismissed from his position as head coach, but remained associated with the club in an advisory role. He had been one of the most successful coaches in Bears history. The club announced the next day that Marc Trestman would replace him from 1 July, having signed a four-year contract. Matt Nagy took over as head coach in 2018, when Trestman was let go after a series of disappointing seasons in which the club failed to secure a place in the playoffs for consecutive years.

Ownership

Originally funded by the A.E. Staley Company, the club became a professional football team in 1920 under the name Decatur Staleys. In 1921, the team was moved to Chicago and was renamed the Chicago Staleys. It was in 1922 that the team was finally renamed to the Chicago Bears. The Bears were initially owned by George Halas and Edward Sternaman, who were also the team's coaches and managers. In 1932, Sternaman left the team and Halas became the sole owner of the team.

In 1963, Halas retired from coaching but retained ownership of the team. After his death in 1983, the ownership of the club passed to his oldest daughter, Virginia Halas McCaskey, who is currently the principal owner. Her son, George McCaskey, is the chairman of the team. The McCaskey family has retained ownership of the team till date, making it one of the few teams in the league that has stayed in the possession of one family for such a long time.

As for the team's finances, it has consistently been one of the most profitable teams in the league. The team generates revenues through various sources such as ticket sales, merchandising, and TV rights. The Bears' finances have been managed efficiently over the years, allowing them to invest in player development and retain their key players. The team's financial strength has also allowed it to make significant investments in improving their home stadium, the Soldier Field.

Despite numerous offers from potential buyers over the years, the McCaskey family has maintained their ownership of the team. Their long-standing connection with the team and their commitment to its success have been key factors in the team's enduring popularity and success on and off the field.

Award

The Chicago Bears is one of the most successful clubs in the NFL in terms of championships won. The club's first championship was the NFL Championship, which they won in 1921 as the Chicago Staleys. In 1932, the club won their first league title and won the NFL Championship for the first time the following year. Since then, they have gone on to win a record 8 NFL Championships—including one Super Bowl title—and their total of 2 Conference Championships. Those championships have meant the club has appeared a record 26 times in the NFL playoffs.
