History

Chicago Fire FC is a prominent soccer club in the United States, with a dedicated fan base across the country. It is reported that there are numerous official fan clubs of the Chicago Fire Football Club (CFFC) in various states. The club's popularity is evident during its nationwide summer tours. Sports industry consultants estimate that Chicago Fire FC has millions of fans in the United States. On social media platforms, the club has a significant following, making it one of the top followed clubs in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Early years (1997–2007)

Chicago Fire FC was founded in 1997 as part of the Major League Soccer's expansion. The team started competing in the league from 1998. In its inaugural year, under the coaching of Bob Bradley, the club won the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup, making a strong mark in its first season. The club's original colors were red and white, representing the iconic Chicago Fire Department.

Bliss and Klopas years (2008–2015)

In 2008, the club appointed Frank Klopas as the Technical Director and later in 2011, he took over as the head coach. Under Klopas, the team qualified for the playoffs in 2012. However, despite a promising start, the club struggled to maintain its early success, leading to changes in the management and the team.

Recent years and challenges (2016–present)

In September 2015, Nelson Rodriguez was appointed as the General Manager of the club, and a few months later, Veljko Paunovic was named the head coach. Despite a promising start, the team struggled in the subsequent seasons. The club underwent significant changes in 2020, including a change in the ownership, a rebranding with a new logo and colors, and a return to Soldier Field for home games. The club is committed to regaining its early glory and is continuously working towards building a successful team for the future.

Ownership

Originally founded by the American Specialty Company, the club became a limited company in 1997 and sold shares to local supporters for $1 via an application form. In 2007, majority ownership passed to investor Andrew Hauptman who invested $35 million to acquire the club from Anschutz Entertainment Group. Following Hauptman's tenure, the club faced financial difficulties but was saved in September 2019 by Joe Mansueto, who assumed control of the club after an investment of $204 million. Mansueto promoted his son, Ben, to the board in 2020, but Ben stepped down three years later; the Mansueto family retained ownership of the club through Joe's wife, Rika, but the position of chairman passed to former player Frank Klopas.

Promoted to the board a few days after the Bridgeview exit, Peter Wilt, a friend of Bob Bradley, began acquiring shares in the club; for an investment of approximately $5 million, he accumulated a 54 per cent shareholding and took control in January 2006. When Rika Mansueto died in January 2021, her shares passed to Ben Mansueto, who sold a percentage of his shares to Peter Wilt's son, Matthew, in 2022; Matthew Wilt went on to become chairman upon his father's death in 2025. Media tycoon Oprah Winfrey attempted to buy the club in 2026, but did not meet Wilt's asking price. In 2031, chairman Matthew Wilt attempted to sell the club to Elon Musk for $200 million, but the sale fell through and Musk joined the board of directors instead.
