Summary

Futbol Club Barcelona, commonly referred to as FC Barcelona or simply Barça, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English, and Catalan footballers led by Joan Gamper, the club has grown to become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism. The club is based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and plays its home matches at the famous Camp Nou, which has a seating capacity of over 99,000.

FC Barcelona has a rich history, boasting 26 La Liga titles, 31 Copa del Rey trophies, 5 UEFA Champions League titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era under legendary manager Pep Guardiola, who led Barça to 14 major titles between 2008 and 2012, including winning the treble in his first season.

Known for its tiki-taka style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and Xavi Hernandez. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances post-Guardiola, FC Barcelona remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence Spanish and world football.

History

FC Barcelona is one of the most popular football clubs in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in Europe. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the FC Barcelona Supporters Club (FCBSC), in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that FC Barcelona has 101 million fans worldwide. The club has the highest social media following in the world among sports teams, with over 110 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that FC Barcelona had the most passionate fans in La Liga.

Early years (1899–1945)

FC Barcelona was formed in 1899 as Foot-Ball Club Barcelona by a group of Swiss, Spanish, English, and Catalan footballers led by Joan Gamper. The club won its first trophy, the Copa Macaya, in 1901 and the Copa del Rey was won for the first time in 1910. During the initial years, the club played in various local competitions but the club started gaining recognition in Spanish football in late 1910s.

Cruyff years (1988–1996)

In May 1988, Johan Cruyff returned to the club as manager and he assembled the so-called 'Dream Team'. He used a mix of Spanish players like Pep Guardiola, and foreign players like Ronald Koeman. Cruyff's side were crowned champions of La Liga four times between 1991 and 1994, and won the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

Post-Guardiola years and struggles (2012–present)

On 27 April 2012, Guardiola announced that he would step down as manager at the end of the season and would be succeeded by assistant coach Tito Vilanova. Despite winning multiple trophies during his tenure, Guardiola stated that he was worn out and needed to recharge. Vilanova led the club to the title in his first season, but was forced to resign in July 2013 due to ill health. He was succeeded by Gerardo 'Tata' Martino, who led the club to second place in his only season in charge.

Ownership

Initially established in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Catalan footballers led by Joan Gamper, FC Barcelona has grown into a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism. The club is currently owned and operated by its supporters, making it one of the few football clubs in the world that operates this way. This unique ownership structure was put into place in 1899 and has been maintained since then. The club's president is elected by the club members, or 'socios', who each hold one vote.

The club's finances have traditionally been strong, with the club generating millions of euros in revenue each year through ticket sales, television rights, and sponsorship deals. However, the club has also faced financial challenges, including debt and the need for infrastructure improvements. In recent years, the club has made efforts to reduce its debt and increase revenue, including signing lucrative sponsorship deals with companies such as Nike and Rakuten.

In 2003, under the presidency of Joan Laporta, the club's finances were stabilized and the team experienced a resurgence on the field, winning numerous titles. Following Laporta's term, Sandro Rosell took over the presidency in 2010, and the club continued its success on and off the field. After Rosell's resignation in 2014, Josep Maria Bartomeu took over and held the position until 2020, when he resigned amidst financial controversy. The current president, Joan Laporta, was elected in 2021, marking his second term as the club's president.

Despite the financial challenges of recent years, FC Barcelona remains one of the most successful and popular football clubs in the world, with a strong and loyal fan base, a rich history, and a commitment to its unique ownership structure and Catalan identity.

Award

FC Barcelona is one of the most successful clubs in Europe in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Campionat de Catalunya, which they won in 1905. In 1929, the club won their first La Liga title and won the Copa del Rey for the first time in 1910. Since then, they have gone on to win a record 26 top-division titles and their total of 30 Copa del Rey titles is the highest among all clubs. Those titles have meant the club has appeared numerous times in the Supercopa de España, winning it 13 times.
