Summary

Fenerbahce SK, commonly referred to as Fenerbahce or simply Fener, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in Turkey. Founded in 1907, the club is based in Kadikoy, Istanbul, Turkey, and plays its home matches at the famous Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 50,000.

Fenerbahce has a rich history, boasting 28 Turkish league titles, 6 Turkish Cups, and a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal appearance, among numerous other domestic and international honors. The club enjoyed its most successful era under legendary managers like Zagallo and Todor Veselinović, who led Fener to numerous Super Lig titles.

Known for its attacking style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Lefter Küçükandonyadis, Alex de Souza, Can Bartu, and Dirk Kuyt. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances, Fenerbahce remains one of the most valuable football clubs in Turkey, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence Turkish and world football.

History

Fenerbahce SK is one of the most popular football clubs in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in Europe. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Fenerbahce SK Supporters Club (FSSC), in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Fenerbahce SK has 25 million fans worldwide. The club has a significant social media following, with over 10 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Fenerbahce SK had the loudest fans in the Turkish Super League.

Early years (1907–1945)

Fenerbahce SK was formed in 1907 in the Kadikoy district of Istanbul. The team initially played games against other local clubs, but on 3 November 1907, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the club—yellow and navy—they won 7–0 against Havagucu.

Championship years (1959–1989)

In 1959, the inauguration of the Turkish Super League led to an upswing in Fenerbahce's fortunes. They won the inaugural league title and followed up with victories in 1961, 1964, 1965 and 1968. The club had a particularly successful period in the 1970s and 80s, winning a further nine titles and establishing themselves as one of Turkey's top clubs.

Recent successes and struggles (2000–present)

On 8 May 2013, Fenerbahce SK announced that its long-serving manager Aykut Kocaman was to step down at the end of the season. The club subsequently appointed Ersun Yanal as his replacement. Despite a promising start, Yanal was unable to replicate Kocaman's success and was replaced by Ismael Kartal in 2014. Despite a number of managerial changes, Fenerbahce SK has continued to be a major force in Turkish football, consistently finishing in the top four of the Super League and regularly competing in European competitions.

Ownership

Originally funded by local businessmen and traders, Fenerbahce SK was founded in 1907. It became a major force in Turkish football and had a significant impact in the local community. The club was owned by its members for many years. Historical figures such as Sukru Saracoglu, who served as the club's president from 1934 to 1950 and also as the Prime Minister of Turkey, played pivotal roles in the development and expansion of the club.

In 1990, the club was transformed into a joint-stock company, with shares distributed among members. This move was designed to bring about financial stability and provide resources for further growth. The club's shares are currently traded on the Borsa Istanbul, Turkey's stock exchange. Despite this, the majority of the club's shares are still owned by club members, ensuring that the control and decision-making powers still rest with the club's faithful.

Over the years, numerous club presidents have made significant investments in the club. An example is Aziz Yildirim, who served as the club's president from 1998 to 2018. Under his leadership, significant investments were made in infrastructure, player signings and youth development. In 2018, businessman Ali Koc was elected as the club's president. Coming from one of Turkey's wealthiest families, Koc has pledged to invest heavily in the club, with the aim of returning Fenerbahce SK to the top of Turkish football and making a significant impact in European competitions.

Fenerbahce SK's finances have been under scrutiny in recent years, with the club facing financial difficulties due to overspending on player transfers and wages. However, under the leadership of Ali Koc and with the support of the club's members and supporters, the club is working towards financial stability and sustainability while striving to maintain its competitive edge on the pitch.

Award

Fenerbahce SK is one of the most successful clubs in Turkey in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Istanbul Football League, which they won in 1912. In 1959, the club won their first league title and won the Turkish Cup for the first time the following year. Since then, they have gone on to win 28 top-division titles and their total of 6 Turkish Cups. These titles have meant the club has appeared multiple times in the Turkish Super Cup; of those appearances, Fenerbahce SK have won a record 9 times.
