Summary

Flamengo Football Club, commonly referred to as Flamengo or simply Mengo, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in Brazil. Founded in 1895 as a regatta club, it officially started its football department in 1914. The club is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and plays its home matches at the famous Maracanã Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 78,000.

Flamengo has a rich history, boasting 7 Brazilian Serie A titles, 3 Copa do Brasil titles, 2 Copa Libertadores titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era under the management of various coaches, who led Flamengo to multiple Serie A titles and Copa Libertadores victories.

Known for its attacking style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Zico, Leandro, Bebeto, and Adriano. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances, Flamengo remains one of Brazil’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence Brazilian and world football.

History

Flamengo is one of the most popular football clubs in the world, particularly in South America, with one of the highest average home attendances in Brazil. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes numerous officially recognised branches of the Flamengo Supporters Club, in several countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Flamengo has millions of fans worldwide. The club has a high social media following in the world among sports teams, with millions of Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Flamengo had the loudest fans in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.

Early years (1895–1945)

Flamengo was formed in 1895 as Grupo de Regatas do Flamengo initially as a rowing club. The football department wasn't established until 1911. Over the years, Flamengo developed into a strong football team, playing against other local and national teams. The team initially played games against other departments and companies, but soon they started to compete in official matches.

Golden years (1980–1983)

In the early 1980s, Flamengo had a historic run of success. The team, led by the likes of Zico, one of the greatest players in the club's history, won several titles, including the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in 1981. This period is fondly remembered as Flamengo's golden era, during which the team also won four Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles.

New Era and dominance (2019–present)

In 2019, under the management of Jorge Jesus, Flamengo experienced a revival. The team won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the Copa Libertadores in the same year, a feat that had not been achieved by any Brazilian team since Pele's Santos in the 1960s. Despite Jesus' departure in 2020, Flamengo continued its dominance in Brazilian football under new managers, winning the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A again in 2020 and 2021.

Ownership

Originally funded by the members of Rowing Club Flamengo, the club was established in 1895. It wasn't until 1911 that the football department was added to the club. As a members club, Flamengo is owned by its supporters who elect the club's president. The club was not initially intended to be a football team; the founders had intended to form a rowing club. In football, the club entered the league competitions in 1912, starting from the Third Division, and was promoted to the First Division the following year.

The club president is the highest authority at the club, elected by the club's voting members. One of the most notable presidents in Flamengo's history is Márcio Braga, who served four terms over a total of 14 years. He was in charge during some of Flamengo's most successful years, including the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup victories in 1981. The current president, Rodolfo Landim, has been serving since January 2019.

Unlike some football clubs, Flamengo has not seen a change in ownership structure with the introduction of external investors. Flamengo remains a members club, with decision-making power resting with elected officials. However, Flamengo's finances have been bolstered by lucrative broadcast rights deals, significant sponsorship agreements, and player sales. The club's revenue has also been greatly enhanced by the successful performance of the team on the pitch, resulting in increased ticket sales and merchandise revenue. One of the significant financial challenges for the club has been managing the cost of player wages and transfer fees while maintaining financial stability.

Award

Flamengo is one of the most successful clubs in Brazil in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Rio de Janeiro State Championship, which they won in 1914. In 1980, the club won their first league title and won the Copa Libertadores for the first time in the same year. Since then, they have gone on to win a record 7 top-division titles and their total of 36 Rio de Janeiro State Championships is a record. Those titles have meant the club has appeared multiple times in the Supercopa do Brasil; of those appearances, Flamengo have won 2 times.
