Summary

Golden State Warriors, commonly referred to as Warriors or simply GSW, is one of the most iconic and successful basketball teams in the world. Founded in 1946 as Philadelphia Warriors, it changed its name to Golden State Warriors in 1971. The team is based in San Francisco, California, and plays its home matches at the famous Chase Center, which has a seating capacity of over 18,000.

Golden State Warriors has a rich history, boasting 6 NBA championships, 11 conference titles, and numerous division titles. The team enjoyed its most successful era under coach Steve Kerr, who led Warriors to 3 NBA championships and 5 consecutive NBA Finals appearances between 2015 and 2019.

Known for its fast-paced and high-scoring style of play, the team has nurtured some of basketball’s greatest talents, including Wilt Chamberlain, Chris Mullin, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances post-Kerr, Golden State Warriors remains one of the world’s most valuable basketball teams, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence American and world basketball.

History

Golden State Warriors is one of the most popular basketball teams in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in the NBA. The team states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Golden State Warriors Fan Club, in at least 24 countries. The team takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Golden State Warriors has 75 million fans worldwide. The team has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after Barcelona and Real Madrid), with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Golden State Warriors had the loudest fans in the NBA.

Early years (1946–1971)

The Golden State Warriors was formed in 1946 as Philadelphia Warriors based in Philadelphia. Initially, the team played games against local teams, but on 20 November 1946, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the team—blue and gold—they were defeated by The New York Knicks.

Attles and Barry era (1971–1980)

In October 1971, the team, now called the Golden State Warriors, had an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions. This era led the team to numerous playoff appearances and a championship win in 1975.

Post-Jackson years and struggles (2014–present)

On 6 May 2014, Mark Jackson was fired as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. He was replaced by Steve Kerr, who led the team to three NBA championships in 2015, 2017, and 2018. Despite a drop in performance in the following seasons, Kerr remains the head coach of the team, aiming to bring the Warriors back to their championship-winning ways.

Ownership

Originally funded by the Peter A. Tyndall, the team was first established in Philadelphia in 1946, as the Philadelphia Warriors, a charter member of the Basketball Association of America. It was then purchased by a group led by Franklin Mieuli in 1962. In 1971, the team was rebranded as the Golden State Warriors and moved to their current home in San Francisco. In 1986, the team was sold to Jim Fitzgerald and Dan Finnane for $17 million.

In 1995, the Warriors were acquired by business tycoon Chris Cohan for the price of $119 million. The team’s performance, however, didn’t improve significantly during Cohan’s ownership and in 2010, Cohan sold the team to a group led by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber for a then-record $450 million. Under the leadership of Lacob and Guber, the Warriors have experienced unprecedented success, winning multiple NBA championships and becoming one of the most valuable franchises in the NBA.

In recent years, the Warriors have also made significant investments off the court. In 2019, they moved into the state-of-the-art Chase Center, a $1.4 billion privately financed project led by owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. The team also has well-known minority owners including Hall of Fame NBA player Magic Johnson and famous Hollywood actor Will Smith. With an estimated value of over $4 billion, the Golden State Warriors are at the top of the NBA's financial ladder.

Award

The Golden State Warriors is one of the most successful teams in the NBA in terms of championships won. The team's first championship was the BAA Championship, which they won as Philadelphia Warriors in 1947. In 1956, the team won their second championship and has since then, gone on to win a total of 6 NBA Championships. Those titles have resulted in numerous players, coaches, and team members being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
