Summary

Green Bay Packers Football Club, commonly referred to as Green Bay Packers or simply Packers, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1919, the club is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States, and plays its home matches at the famous Lambeau Field, which has a seating capacity of over 81,000.

Green Bay Packers has a rich history, boasting 13 league championships, 4 Super Bowl titles, and numerous other division and conference titles. The team enjoyed its most successful era under legendary coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Packers to five NFL championships and two Super Bowl victories between 1959 and 1967.

Known for its aggressive style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Brett Favre, Reggie White, Aaron Rodgers, and Donald Driver. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances post-Lombardi, Green Bay Packers remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence American and world football.

History

Green Bay Packers is one of the most popular football teams in the NFL, with one of the highest average home attendances in the United States. The team states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Green Bay Packers Fans Club (GBPFC), in at least 24 countries. The team takes advantage of this support through its nationwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Green Bay Packers has 75 million fans worldwide. The team has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots), with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Green Bay Packers had the loudest fans in the NFL.

Early years (1919–1944)

Green Bay Packers was formed in 1919 as Acme Packers by Earl 'Curly' Lambeau and George Calhoun. The team initially played games against other local teams, but on 20 November 1920, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colors of the Acme Packing Company—green and gold—they were victorious against Minneapolis Marines.

Lombardi years (1959–1967)

In January 1959, the important appointment of Vince Lombardi as head coach and general manager happened, who demanded an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions. Lombardi led the team to five NFL Championships in seven years, including victories in the first two Super Bowls (I and II). In 1961, the club won the NFL Championship, its first title for 17 years.

Post-Favre years and struggles (2008–present)

On 4 March 2008, Brett Favre announced that he was to retire as the team's quarterback, but would remain at the club as a mentor and team ambassador. He retired as one of the most decorated players in football history. The club announced the next day that Aaron Rodgers would replace him from the start of the next season, having shown promise in his early career. Mike McCarthy was the head coach during this transition, leading the team to a Super Bowl victory in the 2010 season, but was let go after a poor season in 2018 which saw the team fail to make the playoffs.

Ownership

Originally funded by the Green Bay community, the Green Bay Packers became a non-profit corporation in 1923 and sold shares to local supporters for $5 via an application form. Majority ownership has always remained with the community, a unique structure in the NFL, and the club has held multiple stock sales throughout its history to raise funds and prevent bankruptcy. The most significant of these occurred in 1923, 1935, 1950, and 1997, with the funds often used to improve the Packers' home stadium, Lambeau Field.

The Packers are governed by a seven-member Executive Committee, elected from a board of directors. The committee directs corporate management, approves major capital expenditures, establishes broad policy, and monitors management's performance in conducting the business and affairs of the corporation. The current President and CEO is Mark Murphy, a key figure within the franchise since 2008. The Packers' non-profit structure also includes a 45-member board of directors, consisting of local businessmen and women, who are elected by the stockholders.

While the Packers have faced financial challenges over the years, they have managed to thrive due to the community's steadfast support. This unique ownership structure has kept the team in Green Bay, despite being the smallest market in the NFL, and has fostered a close-knit relationship between the team and its fans. The community's involvement also ensures that any profits are invested back into the team, rather than being distributed to individual owners. This has allowed the Packers to remain competitive and has been key to their success over the past century, including multiple NFL championships and Super Bowl victories.

Although the shares sold by the Packers do not include benefits typically associated with stock ownership, such as dividends or the ability to sell the shares on a securities market, they do grant voting rights. This allows the community to have a direct impact on the team's management and reinforces the strong bond between the Packers and their fans. Despite the lack of financial return, shares in the Packers have always sold out quickly, demonstrating the community's ongoing passion and commitment to their team.
