Summary

Juventus Football Club, commonly referred to as Juventus or simply Juve, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the world. Founded in 1897 as Sport Club Juventus, the club is based in Turin, Piedmont, Italy, and plays its home matches at the renowned Allianz Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 41,000.

Juventus has a rich history, boasting 36 Serie A titles, 13 Coppa Italia titles, 2 UEFA Champions League titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era under legendary manager Marcello Lippi, who led Juve to multiple Serie A titles and Champions League victories in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Known for its defensive style of play, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro Del Piero, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances, Juventus remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence Italian and world football.

History

Juventus is one of the most popular football clubs in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in Europe. The club states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Juventus Club Doc, in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Juventus has 85 million fans worldwide. The club has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after Barcelona and Real Madrid), with over 83 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Juventus had the loudest fans in the Serie A.

Early years (1897–1945)

Juventus was formed in 1897 as Sport Club Juventus by a group of young Torinese students. The team initially played games against local teams, but on 8 December 1898, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing their iconic black and white stripes, they defeated Internazionale Torino Football Club.

Trapattoni era (1976–1986)

In 1976, the club made a significant appointment by hiring Giovanni Trapattoni as manager. He implemented a rigorous discipline within the club and led Juventus to an extensive period of success, including six league titles and numerous domestic and international cups. The highlight was the winning of the club's first European Cup in the 1984–85 season.

Post-Calciopoli Scandal and struggles (2006–present)

On 14 July 2006, Juventus were relegated to Serie B due to the Calciopoli scandal. Despite the setback, the club bounced back under the leadership of several managers, most notably Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri. Juventus returned to the top tier of Italian football in the 2007–08 season, and have been dominant in Serie A ever since. They have also reached the UEFA Champions League final on two occasions in recent years, continuing to build on their rich history.

Ownership

Originally funded by a group of Turin noblemen, Juventus became a limited company in 1897. In 1923, majority ownership passed to the Agnelli family when Edoardo Agnelli gained control of the club. The Agnelli family, owners of Fiat, have had a firm grip on the club ever since. After Edoardo's death in 1935, his son Gianni Agnelli became the figurehead of the family and the club, although he didn't take an active role in running Juventus until 1947.

In the early 1980s, Gianni's nephew Umberto Agnelli took over as president, and in the following years, his brother Andrea Agnelli took on the role. The Agnelli family, through their holding company Exor, currently owns a 63.8% stake in the club. The family's commitment to investing in the club has often given Juventus an edge in the transfer market and has been a key factor in the club's success.

However, the Agnellis' control of Juventus hasn't gone unchallenged. In 2006, following the Calciopoli scandal, the club was demoted to Serie B and stripped of two Serie A titles. The Agnelli family was heavily criticized, and there were calls for them to relinquish control of the club. Despite this, the family stood firm, and under Andrea Agnelli's stewardship, Juventus has returned to the top of Italian and European football. In 2010, Libyan businessman Al-Saadi Gaddafi bought a 7.5% stake in the club, but this was later sold.

Award

Juventus is one of the most successful clubs in Europe in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the Italian Football Championship, which they won in 1905. Since then, they have gone on to win a record 36 Serie A titles, and their total of 14 Coppa Italia titles is second only to AS Roma. Those titles have meant the club has appeared a record 9 times in the Supercoppa Italiana; of those 9 appearances, Juventus have won a record 9, including four times when the match was drawn and the trophy shared by the two clubs.
