Summary

Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team, commonly referred to as Mercedes or simply AMG Petronas, is one of the most iconic and successful teams in the world of Formula One. Founded in 1954 as Mercedes-Benz, it later rebranded as Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The team is based in Brackley, Northamptonshire, England, and races its home matches at the famous Silverstone Circuit, which has a seating capacity of over 150,000.

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 has a rich history, boasting 7 Constructors' Championships, 10 Drivers' Championships, and numerous other domestic and international trophies. The team enjoyed its most successful era under the leadership of Toto Wolff, who led Mercedes to seven consecutive Constructors' Championships and five Drivers' Championships between 2014 and 2020.

Known for its precision and technical excellence, the team has nurtured some of Formula One's greatest talents, including Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Michael Schumacher, and Valtteri Bottas. Despite recent challenges and fierce competition, Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 remains one of the world's most valuable racing teams, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence Formula One motor racing.

History

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 is one of the most popular Formula One teams in the world, with one of the highest average television audiences worldwide. The team states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Supporters Club, in at least 24 countries. The team takes advantage of this support through its worldwide tours and promotional events. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 has 75 million fans worldwide. The team has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after FC Barcelona and Real Madrid), with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 had the most engaged fans in the Formula One.

Early years (1954–1990)

The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team traces its origins back to 1954 when Mercedes-Benz entered Formula One for the first time. The team initially competed against other manufacturers, but on 20 November 1954, they competed in their first recorded race; wearing the colours of the brand—silver—they won the French Grand Prix with Juan Manuel Fangio.

Return to Formula One (2010–2013)

In 2010, the impending return of Mercedes-Benz to Formula One as a constructor led to the managerial appointment of Ross Brawn, who demanded an unprecedented level of control over team selection, driver contracts, and training sessions. Brawn led the team to several podium finishes in the following seasons. In 2013, the team won its first race in the modern era at the Chinese Grand Prix with driver Nico Rosberg.

Dominance and struggles (2014–present)

On 28 January 2014, Mercedes announced that Ross Brawn was to retire as team principal, but would remain involved with the team in an advisory role. He retired as one of the most decorated team principals in Formula One history. The team announced the next day that Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe would replace him, having signed multi-year contracts. Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 has been dominant since then, winning multiple World Constructors' Championships and World Drivers' Championships with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. However, the team has faced challenges in recent seasons due to increased competition and regulatory changes.

Ownership

Originally funded by the Daimler AG, Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team was formed in 2010 when Mercedes-Benz purchased the Brawn GP team. The team is based in Brackley, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, using a German licence. Mercedes-Benz had competed in the pre-war European Championship winning three titles and debuted in Formula One in 1954, running a team for two years. After winning their first race at the 1954 French Grand Prix, the team won the 1954 and 1955 drivers championships. After the 1955 Le Mans disaster, Mercedes-Benz withdrew from all factory-sponsored motorsport.

In 2010, with the rebranding of Brawn GP to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, the German car manufacturer returned to the sport as a team after 55 years. The team is also known by its nickname, the 'Silver Arrows'. Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team has been one of the most successful teams in recent Formula One history, winning consecutive drivers' and constructors' championships from 2014 to 2020. As of the end of the 2020 season, the team has won 115 races, 103 pole positions and seven World Constructors' Championships.

In terms of ownership, 60 percent of the team is owned by the parent company Daimler AG, 30 percent by Toto Wolff, and 10 percent by Lauda. Toto Wolff, the team principal and a former racing driver, owns a significant stake in the team and acts as its managing partner. He has been a key figure in the team's success, having joined in 2013. The team's financials are not publicly disclosed, but its success on the track has likely translated to substantial revenue through prize money, sponsorship deals, and commercial partnerships.
