The team takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Mumbai Indians has 75 million fans worldwide. The team has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after Barcelona and Real Madrid), with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Mumbai Indians had the loudest fans in the Indian Premier League.

Early years (2008–2012)

Mumbai Indians was formed in 2008 as a part of the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The team initially played games against other IPL franchises, but on 20 April 2008, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the franchise—blue and gold—they were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Tendulkar years (2008-2013)

In 2008, the impending beginning of the IPL led to the appointment of Sachin Tendulkar as the icon player and captain of the Mumbai Indians. Tendulkar, who had an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions, led the team to multiple league stage qualifications. In 2010, the team reached the final of the IPL for the first time, and in 2013, under Tendulkar's mentorship, they won their first IPL title.

Sharma's captaincy and dominance (2013–present)

On 24 May 2013, Rohit Sharma was appointed as the captain of Mumbai Indians. Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians became the most successful team in the history of IPL. The team announced that Mahela Jayawardene would replace Ricky Ponting as the head coach from 2017, having signed a three-year contract. Under Jayawardene's coaching and Sharma's captaincy, Mumbai Indians won the IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020, establishing their dominance in the league.

Ownership

Originally funded by the Reliance Industries, Mumbai Indians became a franchise in 2008 and was bought by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries for $111.9 million via an auction. Upon its inception, the team was managed by Harsha Bhogle, who had previously served as a cricket commentator. Rahul Sanghvi was appointed as team manager in 2008. In the following years, the management of the team saw numerous changes, with the positions of coach and captain changing hands multiple times.

Robin Singh was appointed as the coach of Mumbai Indians in 2010. Under his guidance, the team saw a significant improvement in their performance, winning the Champions League Twenty20 in 2011.
