Summary

New York Giants, commonly referred to as NY Giants or simply Giants, is one of the most iconic and successful football clubs in the United States. Founded in 1925, the club is based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and plays its home matches at the famous MetLife Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 82,500.

NY Giants has a rich history, boasting 8 NFL Championships, with 4 Super Bowl victories, and numerous other domestic trophies. The club enjoyed its most successful era under legendary coaches Bill Parcells and Tom Coughlin, who led the Giants to two Super Bowl victories each.

Known for its defensive prowess, the club has nurtured some of football’s greatest talents, including Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, Eli Manning, and Michael Strahan. Despite recent challenges and inconsistent performances, NY Giants remains one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, with a global fan base and a rich tradition that continues to influence American and world football.

History

The New York Giants is one of the most popular football teams in the National Football League (NFL), with one of the highest average home attendances in the United States. The team states that its fan base includes more than 200 officially recognized branches of the New York Giants Fan Club, in at least 24 states. The team takes advantage of this support through its summer tours across the country. A study by sports industry consultants Nielsen Sports estimates that the New York Giants have a fan base of millions in the United States. The team has a large social media following among sports teams in the USA, with over 4 million Twitter followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that the New York Giants had the most engaged fans in the NFL.

Early years (1925–1964)

The New York Giants was formed in 1925 by Tim Mara with an investment of $500. The team initially played games against local football teams, but on October 18, 1925, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing their iconic colors of royal blue, red, gray, and white, they were defeated 14–0 by Providence Steam Roller.

Wellington Mara's Leadership (1965–2005)

In 1965, the leadership of the team was taken over by Wellington Mara, who had been involved with the team since its inception. Under Mara's leadership, the Giants saw significant success, including two Super Bowl victories in 1986 and 1990. Mara's tenure is also notable for his role in the NFL's revenue sharing model, which helped maintain the league's competitive balance and financial health.

Modern Era and Struggles (2006–present)

On January 16, 2004, Tom Coughlin was named the Giants head coach. Coughlin led the team to two Super Bowl victories in the 2007 and 2011 seasons. However, after several seasons of missing the playoffs, Coughlin resigned following the 2015 season. His successor, Ben McAdoo, was fired midway through the 2017 season, after a series of poor performances. Pat Shurmur took over as head coach in 2018, but was unable to significantly improve the team's performance. As of 2023, the Giants are working to rebuild their roster and return to their former glory.

Ownership

Originally funded by the New York Baseball Giants, the football team became a separate entity in 1937 and sold shares to local supporters for $1 via an application form. In 1959, majority ownership passed to two local businessmen who invested $500,000 to save the club from bankruptcy, including future club president Wellington Mara. After his death in 2005, the club faced a shift in ownership yet again but was retained in December 2005 by John K. Mara, who assumed control of the club after assuming his father's position. Mara promoted his daughter, Kate, to the board in 2006, but maintained his position as the team's president; the Mara family retained ownership of the club through Wellington's wife, Ann, but the position of chairman passed to former player Steve Tisch.

Promoted to the board a few days after the Super Bowl XLII victory, Jonathan Tisch, a friend of Tom Coughlin, began acquiring shares in the club; for an investment of approximately $40,000,000, he accumulated a 50 per cent shareholding and took control in January 2007. When Ann Mara died in January 2015, her shares passed to John Mara, who retained his percentage of shares to maintain control of the team; John Mara went on to continue as president upon his mother's death in 2015. Media tycoon Robert Kraft attempted to buy the club in 1994, but did not meet Mara's asking price. In 1998, chairman Steve Tisch attempted to sell the club to Donald Trump for $1 billion, but the sale fell through and Trump joined the board of directors instead.

Award

The NY Giants is one of the most successful clubs in America in terms of trophies won. The club's first trophy was the NFL Championship, which they won in 1927. In 1934, the club won their first league title and won the NFL Championship for the first time the following year. Since then, they have gone on to win a total of 8 NFL Championship titles—including 4 Super Bowl titles—and their total of 11 Conference titles is a significant achievement. Those titles have meant the club has appeared multiple times in the National Football Conference (NFC) Championship games; of those appearances, NY Giants have won a significant number, including four times when they went on to win the Super Bowl.
